Part 3: Things To Eat

check out all the red markers on the Google Map. :)

all around the place are Zippy’s restaurants. its a step above fast food. definitely worth checking out. i love the Zippy’s Chili, but try a plate lunch from them. (a plate lunch is a hawaiian institution. its 2 scoops of rice, 1 scoop of macaroni salad, and a meat.) and where ever you go for lunch, make sure to get a lilikoi. its a drink made from passion fruit juice. i can drink it by the gallon!

some of the things you might find in a plate lunch.
thats lomi salmon, aku (tuna) onion poke, and poi in the cups on the left on the plate is haupia (you need to try that. its like coconut jello), kalua pig, rice, and an unopened laulau.

when you go out for poke, the absolute staple is Lomi Salmon. if you’ve never had raw fish before, this would be a very good stepping stone. you could call it a “salad”, but look at it too quick and you might mistake it for pico de gallo. basically its diced tomatoes, green onions, and salted raw diced salmon. (the good ones have a bit of  inamona in it.) but the salt and acid from the tomatoes will partially cook it, like a ceviche. just get a big tub and eat it with rice. soooo good. you can also get it as a side at most plate lunch places.

my absolute favorite place to get poke is  Tamashiro Market!
this is always my first stop as soon as i get off the plane.

ever try to slice a tomato, but instead you end up smooshing the thing all over your cutting board? well you’re not alone. we’ve all done it. most of the time it happens with ripe tomatoes, but thats not always the case. either way,  the primary reason is this: dull knife.

now you can do a  grind session with a wetstone and all of your knives each week, but i have an even better tip for getting perfectly clean slices of tomato: use a serrated blade.

yep. thats my big secret. and theres a prefectly logical explanation as to why it works…

Happy New Year and welcome to 2009! :champagne:

for the few of you who have been here before in the past month, welcome back! and for those of you who are new here, feel free to stop by any time! so… what exactly is Scooby’s World? well, it’s the newly constructed home of me, ScoobySnacks, here in this giant interweb of ours. it’s my own little corner of the blogosphere where i’ll be talking about all kinds of random stuff that i find interesting. now i realize this may not be a very smart strategy to begin with, but who’s to say a website needs to focus on one subject to be successful? and if eventually i find i niche to corner the market in, then so be it. but until then, ScoobysWorld.com will be your one-stop-shop for all things balanced between your nerdy cyber world and your AFK offline life. ^_^

we’re going to start off slow and steady here, and i’m aiming to fill at least 2 new entries a week to begin with. but don’t be surprised if down the line i’m in randomly talkative mood and you see dozen fresh posts in a day!

now i know that this place isn’t completely polished and in full working order yet, but do please feel free to check back often. its gonna be a learning process for me too. so maybe once i’ve taught myself the ropes, i’ll let you in on all the little tips, tricks, and tweaks i’ve leared about the ins and outs of blogging. :)

so a little bit about me: my name is ScoobySnacks. i’ve been traveling the internet for quite some time now and have seen many things. but theres always more to see and more to learn. i’m a foodie, i’m a nerd, i’m a gamer, i’m philosopher, i’m a student of the world. i’ll share my sacred cooking tips, my astonishing insights, my ponderings of unimportant things, the musings of life, and the many facets of geekery, movies, music, television,  gadetry, techno l33tness, pro wrestling madness, failed backyard gardening, travels to Hawaii, roadtrips around California, cheap wines, restaurant reviews, cartoons from the 80’s, the finer points of internet marketing and making money online, how to peice together a new PC, the conversion of a Mac hater into an iPod fanboy, tasty pineapples … and hell pretty much everything in between and anything else that floats my fancy. :P

so let’s kick of the new year amongst friends! make your self at home! have a look around and leave your mark where ever you please. and tell your friends to do the same. ScoobysWorld.com is now open 24 hours for your enjoyment! :shiny:

 .dj.

have a prosperous 2009!

tonight the gf and i went to this new pho place, Pho Appetit, which opened up recently just around the corner from where we live. its situated in this new multicultural shopping center, called The Globe, which is still under development, so there isn’t a whole lot of traffic going throgh the place yet. and for dinner at 7:00pm, it was suprising to see that only one other patron came in during the entire time we were there. although tonight is a Thursday, and i have seen them seating more customers during the weekends.

what i can say about their establishment is that the ambiance is very nice. it has a clean, minimalistic earth tone which is accented by splashes of bright red lamp fixtures and the main wall of the dining area is made of textured brick of various shades of red and orange. the seats were backless wooden chairs which where comfortable. the one thing that i did not care for though were the tables. they stood on a solid wooden block about 5 inches high that had the exact same surface area of the table top. it was weird having to sit with your feet raised up off the floor.

and now for the food…
