i took the plunge and decided to upgrade my iPhone to the new 3.0 firmware.
and i’m happy to say that all went well!

i used iPhone Dev Team’s redsn0w program for Windows. i know there’s tons of info out there on the interwebs on how to do this, but trust me, most of it is just a mess and hard to read through. and all the tutorial vids on youtube are done by amatures or kids that don’t know how to enunciate when they speak or how to hold up a camera without shaking it like the Blair Witch Project.

so i did all the grunt work for you. i got the links to everything you’ll need, and how to get it done in only 6 main steps. the most important thing is to backup all your data before proceeding. i take no responsibility for any loss of data or damage to your iPhone which may occur. but that said, this is exactly what i did, and it all went well according to plan. all credit goes to iPhone Dev Team for producing the jailbreak/unlock software, and to the rest of the scene for forcing me to trudge through heaps of incoherrent info which gave me no other choice to write my own tutorial for my own personal future reference.

this process was done on an iPhone 2G and is valid for use on all versions of iPhones and iPod Touches EXCEPT for the brand new iPhone 3GS. good luck and happy customizing!

well it seems that i have all but given up on the blogging platform. i thought it was cool when i first got into it about 6-8 months ago, but i just dont have the time to put into the blogging community and network with all the awesome peoples i found out there. i wish i could, but its just too hard for an amateur to monetize a blog and make it profitable. so i’ll just keep this going without a posting schedule, and add a few random thoughts here and there as i remember it. and then i’ll tweet it out, so you guys can still keep track of me that way. tell a friend too, i could always do with a few more Twitter followers. find my Twitter link over there on the right —>

anyways, here’s a little anecdote i recently shared with some of my forum friends.
hope you enjoy.
-Scoob

so did i ever tell you guys about my spider story? :hmmm: …

this happened when i was in 4th grade. got up at 7 in the morning to get ready for school, which started at 8. had breakfast, brushed my teeth, changed, etc. this was in the fall/winter because i remember it being dark still. so 7:30 comes around and i sit on the couch in the dark living room to watch some Jetsons before i leave. the lights are off and the curtains are still shut, its just me and the glow of my cartoons. i like Astro. i guess i have a thing for talking dogs. anyways, i see this vertical line on the tv screen, which was weird. i try to focus for a better look, and it turns out its not on the screen it was actually a thread of spider silk coming down from the ceiling. and it wasnt even near the tv. it was right in front of me. so i look lower and the damn spider is actually at the end of it going straight down towards my lap. ahhh fuck. whatever, i wasnt really afraid of spiders. so i grab up above at the silk so i can transport the spider to the sink, but when i pick it up, the spider is gone. wth. so i stand up and try to shake my clothes off in case he jumped on me and thats when i feel i sharp sting on my crotch! :faint: WTF?!?! apparently i had not zipped up my zipper when i had gotten dressed earlier and the fucking spider got its way into my tighty whiteys and bit me on the crotch!!! holy shit did that hurt like fuck. i ran to the bathroom and took all my clothes off to shake out, but there was no spider to be found. i then went to inspect the area, and sure as shit, the fucking spider bit me. lucky thing it didnt catch me on the wang though. it was just above.

so yep. i got molested by a spider that ran away and was never to be seen afterwards. and i had to walk to school that morning. do you know how uncomfortable it is to walk to school with a spider bite on your crotch? yeah, it kinda sucks. i think i had a big ol’ bite mark for a week after that. the kind that turns into like a big boil. ewwwww. and of course i didnt tell any one coz i didnt want anybody to have to go lookin at it. just had to walk very carefully for a good long while. :/

suffice to say, i hated spiders for a very long time after that.

Part 4: Once You Get There

ok here’s the final installment of Scooby’s Guide To Oahu :shiny: …

as soon as you get off the airplane and out of the arrivals terminal, stop, have a look around you, and take in a deep breath. Honolulu Airport is mostly an open-air structure, and theres a couple little flower gardens along the main pathways from the gates down to the baggage claim. hopefully you fly in on a clear sunny day, so right away you’ll get a nice fresh ocean breeze and a floral scent in the air.

now when you get down to the baggage claim, when youre waiting for your bags to come out, look around for one of those stand thingies with all the tour guide maps and flyers. grab whatever looks interesting to you. a lot of them have coupons in them. but whatever you do, make sure you get This Week Oahu, Oahu Gold and 101 Things To Do. they have maps, coupons, and listings for special events going on around the island that week.

ok then grab your bags and turn around to head out the big sliding doors. whoever is picking you up will probably meet you out on the sidewalk over there. (make sure to turn your cell phone back on .)

about your mp3 player… yeah its nice for the plane ride and sitting on the beach. but when you’re out driving around, then you absolutely must listen to the radio. you know what, you should just start listening right now. i always listen to KCCN fm100. go on, it’ll put you in the mood. i also like Island 98.5, but KCCN is my favorite. and once you’re actually there, it will be the soundtrack to your adventures.

for me the first day i get there i usually dont feel like doing anything after the plane ride other than to get something to eat, catch some sun at the beach, then go to the house to unpack. if thats you too, then i’d say go to Makai Market at Ala Moana Shopping Center for a quick bite, then head across the street to Ala Moana Beach to dig your toes in the sand. aim for my marker on the map, the sand is softer on that side. make sure to put on your sunblock! and dont forget the radio!

and theres your first day
so i guess the rest of your trip is pretty much up to you.

some things to remember though…

set your camera to a high megapixel and have lots of memory cards handy. unlimited photo ops! :photo:

definitely go to the Swap Meet on wednesday morning. do not miss it. if you go on the weekend, you might spend all your monies before then. plus you might also want to go again for a second time on sat/sun.

when you drive around the island, dont be afraid to stop and take a look around. if you see a beach off to the side of the road that catches your eye, then stop the car and get out for swim! :dive:

dont worry about getting lost. look at my map. the markers show the main route around the island. just get back in the car and drive, you’ll make it back home eventually.

this might sound dumb, but go to WalMart. they have lots of hawaiian things you wont find back home. :yes:

try all kinds of new food! :lick:

if you see sea turtles on the beach, dont touch them, they’re a protected species.

if you see big giant monk seals, dont get too close. if they’re not sleeping they will probably bark and chase you.

if you go fishing, try not to hook any humuhumunukunukuapua’a. its the state fish and i’m sure theres a big fine for taking them out of the water.

oh, here’s basic vocabulary lesson…

aloha = hello/goodbye. but its more than that. aloha is aloha. you’ll understand when you get there :).

mahalo = thank you.

mahalo nui loa = thank you very much.

a hui hou = until next time/see you later.

kama’aina = a local, someone who has lived in hawaii most of their life.

auntie/uncle = everybody calls the older folks either auntie or uncle. even if theyre not related or even know each other. its just a bit of respect, like saying sir or ma’am, but with more aloha.

ono = delecious, exceptionally tasty.

grind(z) = slang for eat. “You like grind?” means “(Do) You want (to get semething) to eat?” just picture a cow chewing some grass. thats grinding.

yep, i think thats all you need to know (until i think of something else )
its gonna be fun :dance:

Part 3: Things To Eat

check out all the red markers on the Google Map.

all around the place are Zippy’s restaurants. its a step above fast food. definitely worth checking out. i love the Zippy’s Chili, but try a plate lunch from them. (a plate lunch is a hawaiian institution. its 2 scoops of rice, 1 scoop of macaroni salad, and a meat.) and where ever you go for lunch, make sure to get a lilikoi. its a drink made from passion fruit juice. i can drink it by the gallon!

some of the things you might find in a plate lunch.
thats lomi salmon, aku (tuna) onion poke, and poi in the cups on the left on the plate is haupia (you need to try that. its like coconut jello), kalua pig, rice, and an unopened laulau.

when you go out for poke, the absolute staple is Lomi Salmon. if you’ve never had raw fish before, this would be a very good stepping stone. you could call it a “salad”, but look at it too quick and you might mistake it for pico de gallo. basically its diced tomatoes, green onions, and salted raw diced salmon. (the good ones have a bit of inamona in it.) but the salt and acid from the tomatoes will partially cook it, like a ceviche. just get a big tub and eat it with rice. soooo good. you can also get it as a side at most plate lunch places.

my absolute favorite place to get poke is Tamashiro Market! :thumbsup:
this is always my first stop as soon as i get off the plane.

consider going to McDonald’s for breakfast one morning.
instead of a pancake/egg/sausage Big Breakfast, you can have rice, spam and eggs!
http://www.mrcheapstuff.com/deals/2007/08/…tems-in-hawaii/ :w00t:

some tasty things that you definitely need to try are kalua pig and laulau. (as pictured above.) kalua pig is shredded pork from a pig that has been roasted (traditionally) in an imu, which is a pit dug in the ground then coals/wood, lava rocks are placed at the bottom to do the cooking, then a layer of banana leaves and ti leaves are put over the fire, then the whole pig, then covered with more leaves and a burlap sack. its left in the pit all day which roasts and smokes it. when it comes out, the meat is so delicious and tender. it just falls apart. and laulau is a pouch made out of a ti leaf. in it is a piece of pork, a piece of butterfish, and the leaves from the taro plant (it tastes like spinach) and the whole pouch is steamed. when you open it up, all the flavors taste like magic.

if you have a sweet tooth, then do not miss Leonard’s Bakery!
their filled malasadas are nothing short of amazing :yes:

damn i’m getting hungry now

hawaiians love their food. look heres a song about it
(pipikaula is hawaiian beef jerky. pipi means cow. but kau kau means eat )

like i said in the Part 1 of this guide, i put together this Google Map of nearly 50 points all around the island that shouldnt be missed. most people only visit for a week or two, so this list will definitely be more than enough to keep you busy. :yes:

Blue = Point Of Interest
Green = Beach/Park
Red = Food
Purple = Shopping

i highly recommend you get the Google Earth program and view the map through there. just click on the “View in Google Earth” link on the map page. This way you can turn on all the extra features like 3D Buildings and view all the links to pictures and Wikipedia entries. very helpful indeed.

another good idea is to explore the perimeter of the island. search around for beaches in the area you’re staying. you might find a nice hidden gem that won’t be crowded by a lot of tourists.

try to read all the comments i put on the Google Map. i know its a lot (just like this post, sorry!), but most of them have info that might help you decide if you want to check out that spot or not. oh and i added a couple more markers, so some blue ones are not numbered.

here’s my Do Not Miss list (i tried to condense it as best i could)…

3. Aloha Stadium Swap Meet

6. Dole Plantation

9. Matsumoto Shave Ice

Giovanni’s Original White Shrimp Truck

17. Chief Sielu’s Ali’i Tour @ Tropical Farms Macadamia Nut Outlet

19. Pali Lookout

22. Rabbit Island lookout

23. blowholes

Diamond Head

Leonard’s Bakery… must have malasadas

30. Waikiki… just go everywhere here.

Ala Moana Shopping Center

Tamashiro Market… eat poke here!

or you know what?… completely ignore everything i wrote and just enjoy yourself.

Part 1: Before You Go

a few months ago, my friend Butterfly got the opportunity to visit hawaii for the first time. we got to talking about it and i ended up pointing out a few things that possibly are not on the map that most tourists are aware of. well first things first, if you’re going to the islands, theres a few traveling supplies you need to gather for your trip.

you’ll need sun block (highest you can get, SPF 50 is good), spray on sunblock to carry around, toothbrush and other toiletries, and sunglasses. and possibly a large beach towel if you already have one. or you can just buy on there. that should do it, aside from clothes. maybe your ipod or book if youre a reader.

then when you pack your suitcase, pack light. shorts, skirts, tshirts, tank tops, etc. even if you go in the fall/winter, it can still be very warm over there compared to the rest of the country. my cousin once told me the average difference between summer and winter is only about 10-20 degrees F. and dont pack too much either, you’ll probably spend lots of monies on stuffs to bring back. plus lots of cheap comfy beachwear to pick up at the Aloha Swap Meet on wednesdays or weekends.

in Part 2 of this guide is a map that is loaded with tons of places of visit, with info on each of them to help you decide if its a spot you’d like to visit.

in the mean time, here is a list of sites to check out to help plan your trip:

Native Blend - Take Me Back To Paradise

hello faithful readers! (all two of you, and the spambot!)
by this time tomorrow i’ll be leaving on a jet plane on my way back to paradise with the gf. and in celebration of this momentous occasion, i have put together Scooby’s 4-Part Guide To Oahu! its chocked full of useful info for the first-time visitor to hawaii. and it even might be useful for some of the kama’aina as well.

now since i know i wont have much time over the next 2 weeks for blogging while i’m off doing important things at the beach, i have scheduled my Guide To Oahu to post starting tomorrow and over the next four subsequent days. so be sure to check back and let me know what you think. and if you’re one of the homegrown who’s reading this, then please feel free to leave a comment on your favorite spots on Oahu, or to point out any places that i may have left off on the comprehensive tour map which will be published in Part 2. i still have a few that i need to add to the list, like the Lion Coffee factory and Plantation Village. and i’m sure i’ll find a couple more places during this trip thats worth adding to the list later too.

and when i’m not online, i’ll be trying to take as many pictures as i can on the iPhone and will be posting them to TwitPic whenever i can find a wifi hotspot. so check out the pictures here: http://twitpic.com/photos/scoobysworld

and also be sure to follow me on Twitter so you can also read the photo comments: http://twitter.com/ScoobysWorld

see you at the beach! :wave2:
which means one week from now, the gf and i will be back on the rock for 2 excellent weeks of cruising around the island for beach, food, and music! and not only that, a good friend of mine will be vacationing there at the same time, so i’ll get to show him and his wife around some of my favorite spots that tourists usually don’t see…

Hawaii is simply one of those places that everyone should have the good fortune to visit at least once in their lifetime. and for those of you planning a trip soon, later on i’ll post my Guide To Oahu, so be sure to check back here for a good long list of must see places around the isle. i’ll have a Google Map with notes on just a fraction of the places worth visiting: places to eat, beaches to sun in, great views, where to spend a few dollars, and other places to enjoy yourself.

the last time i was out there was back in 2006, so i’m kind of out of the loop. if youre in Hawaii right now, please drop me a line and let me know of anything going down. i’ll be there from Feb17-Mar4, so unfortunately i’ll miss out on the Honolulu Twestival, but i’m still hoping theres other events to crash. hopefully a taping of Lost.

much aloha! :tan:

some of you may know that i live in the San Francisco Bay Area. well tonight i was watching a local tech show called Tech Now, and on this particular episode (Show #508) there was a story about a guy whose washing machine had a broken buzzer. of course everyone needs to wash clothes, but this poor guy was now unable to know when it was time go out to the garage to put his clean laundry in the dryer. being a nerd by nature, as a lot of us are down here in Silicon Valley, Ryan Rose decided that it wasnt worth buying a brand new washing machine just to replace a broken buzzer. instead, he set up his washing machine with a Twitter account and told it send a tweet to his cell phone when the load was finished!

Washing Machine Twitter Hack from Ryan Rose on Vimeo.

this is genious! of course its also a bit silly, but the true geeks can appreciate his artistry.

after watching the story on tv, of course i had to go to his Twitter page and check it out myself. and while i think this is cool in that nerdy sort of way, i cant help but notice a few flaws in Ryan’s alert system. the first is, wow, that was a lot of trouble and tinkering to figure out how to even hook up an ethernet cable to a Maytag, let alone get it online and on Twitter. but then figured Ryan lives in the heart ot tech country and probably has an engineering degree.

and the second thing i noticed after checking out the tweet status at twitter.com/pimpy3wash, is that jeez, Ryan sure isnt much of a water conservationist! he washes 2 loads of laundry just about every 3 days! dude, c’mon! do you really need to wash your clothes that often? we know your washing machine is cool n all, what with being connected to the interwebz and everything, but man, save the polar bears! at least rig up a windmill or put some solar panels or something on your roof to offset the amount of electricity and water youre using!

either way, cool or not, good job to him for figuring out how to save $3 by not buying a kitchen timer and having the first major appliance that can send out tweets.

as of this posting, PiMPY3WASH has 432 followers. i wonder how many he’ll have in a month or so. :hmmm:
